Star Wars Episode 7 Release Date: Disney And Lucasfilm Confirm Standalone Star Wars Films

The descendent and clone of a great Mandalorian warrior, the bounty hunter Boba Fett stands as one of the greatest characters created in the "Star Wars" universe. Could the son of Jango Fett star in his own standalone "Star Wars" film?

The answer is maybe now that Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed rumors that there are standalone "Star Wars" movies planned in addition to the already announced new "Star Wars" trilogy.

In a video interview with CNBC, Iger announced that the studio would make standalone movies based on characters in addition to the three sequels it had previously announced last year.

"We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films," said Iger. "(Lawrence) Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga."

He added, "So we plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."

Iger did not confirm or deny any of the rumors that are currently circulating about what Star Wars character would be the first to get a standalone movie. The most recent rumor suggests that Jedi Master Yoda would be the first to receive a spinoff.

In an interview with ScreenRant, "Captain America: The First Avenger" director Joe Johnston expressed his interest in directing a film based on the bounty hunter Boba Fett.

When asked if he had shown his former boss George Lucas "Captain America: The First Avenger," Johnson said, "You know if he wants to see it, I would show it to him. I'm trying to get George to make a feature based on Boba Fett."

He added, "I would like to (Direct), it would be a lot of fun."

Hopefully, Disney listens to fan feedback and produces some great standalone films including movies based on Boba Fett and Master Yoda.

Disney and Lucasfilm has recently announced that J.J Abrams is the director of the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII." The movie is slated for release in the Summer of 2015, where it will likely go against Disney's "Avengers" sequel and the proposed "Justice League of America" film adaptation from Warner Bros Studios.
