iPhone 7 camera sapphire lens and the Home button covers are reportedly less durable than common sapphire covers that can be found in watches. If true, the iPhone 7 may have used a sapphire laminate instead. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are also said to be lagging behind in sales compared to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
The iPhone 7 lens was compared against a traditional watch sapphire cover in a scratch test to find out about hardness levels. The test sparked speculation that Apple used sapphire laminate over glass which may have been cost-effective but resulted in weaker durability rating in contrast to a traditional watch, JerryRigEverything reported. The video revealed the iPhone 7's sapphire lens cover getting scratched by a #6 pick.
In contrast, a Tissot watch face's sapphire only got scratched by a #8 pick. However, the video was not able to do the hardness test on on the Apple Watch display. It is said that the stainless steel Apple Watches have a sapphire glass cover that is said to be scratch-resistant but not shatterproof. The Apple Watches are expected to withstand more damage than the aluminum models.
Prior to the test video, Apple marketing head Phil Schiller previously claimed that the iPhone 7 did not drop sapphire. The tech specs page for iPhone 7 and 7 Plus on the official Apple page also mentioned the Sapphire crystal lens cover that was previously introduced in the iPhone 5s.
Meanwhile, Apple reportedly would not release the weekend sales figure for its latest flagship phones. Rumor has it that the data revealed sales slower than its predecessor, the iPhone 6s. Apple CEO Tim Cook previously announced that their decision not to reveal the weekend sales figure was because it was starting to represent the company's ability to move stock at short notice instead of the desire for a new handset.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus sales figures reportedly revealed that the market share of both of current Apple devices is 3.6 percent after its first two weeks on sale. In comparison, the iPhone 6 and 6 plus had a 4.0 percent market share after its first two weeks, Localytics reported. Watch iPhone 7 Hammer & Knife Scratch Test video here:
