Creator of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8, Julie Plec, has already mentioned that Nina Dobrev is still interested in returning to the show as Elena, Damon's object of romance. However, in real life, Dobrev is no longer Somerhalder's apple of the eye since their messy break up. In fact, rumors had been circulating that it is Somerhalder who does not agree of Dobrev's return.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Plec stressed that though everything has been finalized, it does not mean that writers could not change their mind. Having said that, fans could hope that "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 will have a happy ending for Damon and Elena. Kevin Williamson, the show's co-creator, said that the ending is both tragic and sad.
Once again, fans are speculating what Williamson meant by tragic. Some spoiler says that in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8, Damon and Elena will have a second chance in their relationship, but will end up killing themselves or being killed. Now, that is surely a tragic ending.
As mentioned, Dobrev left the show after season 6, but her character Elena was not killed, but merely in a state of coma. As it is, it is possible that she could be awakened in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 and be reunited with Damon.
