"Designated Survivor" Season 1 Episode 5 will be airing this week and it looks like President Kirkman has a lot more headaches to deal with. Starring "24" star Kiefer Sutherland as a housing secretary who is forced to become President after an explosion killed the President and members of the three branches of government; the show has been one of broadcast's brightest gems in an otherwise bleak fall television season.
In the episode directly preceding "Designated Survivor" Season 1 Episode 5, President Kirkman (Sutherland) finally grew his metaphorical political balls. According to Entertainment Weekly, after Governor Royce (Michael Gaston) bars Emily (Italia Ricci) from leaving the airport to observe the protest, the President ordered the Governor to be arrested. On the other hand, Congresswoman Hookstraten (Virginia Madsen) makes her intentions known to Aaron (Adan Canto) when she offers a place for him in her political backyard.
In the teaser released for "Designated Survivor" Season 1 Episode 5, we see President Kirkman dealing with the possible blowback that will be caused by his decision to bomb the Algerian facility. This declaration of war is a much needed move in the country however it looks like it will fail.
"Designated Survivor" Season 1 Episode 5 will be a big test for the political thriller as shows usually have a considerable drop in ratings when there is a break. The show is one of the highest rated premieres of the television season along with NBC's "This Is Us," according to USA Today, so the pressure is high on ABC to maintain or at least stop a possible ratings free fall.
