'Scrolls' Beta Set For April

"Scrolls," the next game from "Minecraft" developer Mojang, will enter beta at the end of April, the company says. "Scrolls" is a collectible card game similar to "Magic: The Gathering" and Blizzard's recently announced "Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft."

Similar to how "Minecraft" launched, "Scrolls" will start with a paid beta that will eventually increase in price until the final product is released. "Minecraft" has become a cultural phenomon, sellng 20 million copies across PC, iOS, Android and Xbox 360, according to CNBC.

Given the massive success of "Minecraft" there must be some anxiety about the follow-up, no? Jakob Porser, co-founder and game designer at Mojang, says that's not the case. He tells Polygon:

"The way we approach it is this is the game we wanted to make. We realize it's a narrow genre compared to what 'Minecraft' has become. I have no expectation that 'Scrolls' is going to sell way beyond Minecraft, absolutely not. What I would like is for the game to find a core, a bunch of players that actively love the game. The beautiful thing with Mojang and the success of 'Minecraft' is that we really don't have that pressure, that every game has to sell x amount of copies or we're going to go bankrupt. So we're in a good position that we can experiment and try some of the stuff that we want to do and we are going to do that."

Are we about to enter a golden age of collectible card video games? Only time will tell, but here's a trailer to hold you over until the beta.
