'The Dark Tower' Spoilers, Cast, Predictions & Theories: Stephen King Movie Pushed Back to Summer 2017?

Sad news for fans of "The Dark Tower," as it seems there will be a lengthy wait before the Stephen King movie hits theaters. The release date of the film adaptation of the fantasy novel has been pushed back to summer 2017.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the Stephen King movie will no longer meet its original release date of February 17, 2017. Instead, "The Dark Tower" will be released sometime during summer 2017. The film will star Idris Elba as Roland the Gunslinger, while Matthew McConaughey plays a sorcerer called the Man in Black. The film will find both characters in search of the mystical tower that strategically stands between several dimensions.

Sony Pictures and MRC, the production company behind "The Dark Tower," have agreed to push back the release date of the film to accommodate post-production processes. Such processes include the visual effects, as well as promotion for the upcoming movie. Filming for the Stephen King movie ended back in July.

According to a source, the studios were forced to push back the release date of "The Dark Tower" because they faced two choices. They were either going to increase expenditure to expedite the visual effects process or delay the Stephen King movie to have more time to implement it. Production is hopeful that given the additional few months, they would be able to further promote the film, which is said to be the beginning of a franchise.

GameSpot reports that "The Dark Tower" is directed by Nikolaj Arcel, with a screenplay by Oscar Award winner Akiva Goldsman and Anders Thomas Jensen. Stephen King serves as an unofficial consultant for the film. Keep checking back when we reveal the release date of the highly anticipated "The Dark Tower."
