Gran Turismo 6 Confirmed, Headed To PS3 Later This Year [UPDATED]

It's now definitely official. Gran Turismo 6 will launch on PlayStation 3 this holiday season, Sony has announced via a release. All of the tracks and cars from Gran Turismo 5 will be retained. The game will come with seven new locations, bringing the total to 33, and more information will be released about the game in June at E3.

"It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo," said Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit. "Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!"

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo franchise, as the original Gran Turismo was released for the original Playstation back in 1998. Sony celebrated their storied franchise during the Silverstone event in the U.K., making it the perfect time to reveal the future of the critically-acclaimed racing simulator.

What can racing fans look forward to with this new title? Gran Turismo 6 is set to include the Silverstone circuit itself as a playable track, and developers Polyphony have been seen gathering data on the world-famous Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst, Austrailia.

If you've grown attached to your Gran Turismo 5 vehicle, you can rest assured knowing every car from the previous game will make a return. The game is shaping up to be the most customizable one yet, and could boast a car selection of over 1200 vehicles.

No official release date has been announced yet, though World Car Fans suggests that a November 28th release is likely. Sony has yet to reveal whether Gran Turismo 6 will also be available for this fall's Playstation 4, though the press release suggests a future version for the next-gen console is a possibility.
