Fede Alvarez, director of genre hits such as "Evil Dead" and "Don't Breathe", has been signed by Sony Pictures to direct "The Girl in the Spider's Web", a follow-up novel written by David Lagercrantz to Stieg Larsson's "Millenium" novel series. Attested by the consistent rave of critics, Alvarez has proven himself a skilled manufacturer of tension and suspense, and thus an ideal director to helm the upcoming adaptation.
The last English-language film from the Millenium series is the David Fincher film, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" starring Rooney Mara, which opened to at best a mixed reception. While fans showed inexhaustible enthusiasm for a follow-up movie following Lisbeth Salander, a sequel didn't happen. The new film is already in development and will pick up on the events from the fourth novel written by Lagercrantz. Robert Eggers, who wrote and directed the indie horror phenomenon "The Witch", has meanwhile been tapped to helm "The Girl Who Played With Fire", the sequel to Fincher's 2011 original.
"The Girl in the Spider's Web" follows Salander who in the novel hacks her way inside the American National Security Agency. So far details are sparse regarding the possibility of Rooney Mara returning as Salander, or if Alvarez's and Eggers' adaptations will be connected at all. A report, however, says that the latter will feature an all-new cast and crew. No official word has been released regarding a playdate.
