After the massive success of the first movie, it is safe to say that "Doctor Strange 2" is one of the most anticipated sequels coming in the next few years. The movie, which is expected to welcome back star Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular character, has not been announced yet but the second installment in the franchise is already a foregone conclusion in what is expected to be a busy slate for Marvel movies.
After the Hollywood Reporter interviewed Benedict Cumberbatch and the "Sherlock" season 4 actor kind of confirmed that he will be in "Avengers 3," it is starting to look like "Doctor Strange 2" will not be coming until 2018. Instead, "Doctor Strange 2" will start shooting after Cumberbatch finishes filming for "Avengers 3." This also supports the rumor that "Sherlock" season 4 will be the last for the series so Cumberbatch can focus on Marvel movies.
This comes as "Doctor Strange" has become the fourteenth movie hit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Deadline, the predecessor of "Doctor Strange 2" has already earned $500 million worldwide. In fact, in a rather unexpected development, it earned well in the Chinese territories, which usually does not happen even to the massively popular Marvel movies in the emerging market.
As of now, Marvel Entertainment and Walt Disney Entertainment has not announced a release date for "Doctor Strange 2" yet. On the other hand, "Avengers 3" will be released in North American theaters on Friday, May 4, 2018.
