What is Deus Ex: The Fall?

Eidos Montreal is trying to get anticipation going for whatever "Deus Ex: The Fall" is, asking fans via Twitter if they were ready for it. Only problem? It's hard to get ready for something when you have no idea what it is. So, short answer? No, we're not.

Registrations for Deus Ex: The Fall popped up back in March, but the company never explained what plans were for the property. This remark on Twitter is their first official ackowledgement of it. CBS Films has reign over a movie based on Human Revolution, so The Fall likely has nothing to do with it. It would also make very little sense for Eidos Montreal to be tweeting about the movie anyway.

The idea of a game has been introduced as well, but the timing just seems off. As Human Revolution has been out for two years already, a DLC seems a bit late. It also seems kind of early for a brand new game, as gaps between the games have traditionally taken at least three years, eight in the case of the time between Invisible War and Human Revolution

Thankfully, we don't have to keep the guesswork going. The teaser tweet was later followed up by another, this one asking, "Who is Ben Saxon?" shedding a little more light on the mystery.

For non-readers, Ben Saxon was the protagonist of the Deus Ex novel, "Icarus Effect," a prequel story of sorts that leads into the events of Human Revolution (fun fact: it also marks the first chronological appearance of the orange soda loving Schwarzenegger-esque cyborg Gunther Herman, and explains his ocular enhancements). Saxon was former employee of  Belltower, a private military corporation that features heavily in Human Revolution. After numerous taking numerous injuries in the Australian Civil War (another event catalogued throughout the game), he undergoes similar cybernetic enhancements like protagonist Adam Jensen. He would go on to become a member of the Tyrants, other enhanced soldiers that Jensen takes down one by one through in the game. However, he eventually learns their true intent, and like Jensen, does what he can to take them down.

It's possible that The Fall could be either a re-telling of the events of the book, or could illustrate what happens to Saxon following the events of the book. With E3 around the corner, it's possible that Eidos will have more information on this by the time the convention starts. We'll keep you posted as more details become available.
