Alongside Steam's annual Autumn Sale, which is now live, is its very first Steam Awards where the Steam Community chooses the nominees. This new event will gather people to decide what game titles they should nominate to honor the best games of the year.

According to Polygon, users can go to any games' store page in the duration of the Autumn Sale to nominate a game for one of eight awards. "For the first time in human history, our Steam Community will decide the nominees for the prestigious Steam Awards," Valve said.

Valve decided to make the Steam Awards a little unusual rather than using the bog-standard process like Best Action Game. Instead, Valve came up with categories such as Best Use of a Farm Animal Award and the Villain Most in Need of a Hug Award.

A ninth award will be joining those categories, which the Steam Community will identify the category qualifiers and the nominees. Steam users will be submitting their suggestions for the nominees of Steam Awards where the senior members of the Steam Award Selection Committee will decide with the award basing the write-in submissions.

Steam Awards are incorporated into Steam's badge system and users would be able to earn and level up the Steam Awards Nomination Committee badge by nominating a game and play the game that they have nominated. Additionally, the Steam Autumn Sale this year and the period for nomination for the 2016 Steam Awards starts Nov. 23 and ends on Nov. 29. Valve will be rolling out the awards in December.

Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, Valve Corporation is an American video game developer and digital distribution company. It was founded on Aug. 24, 1996. Valve entered the game hardware market with the Steam Machine in 2015, which is a line of prebuilt gaming computers running SteamOS.
