Wolfenstein: The New Order - The details so far

Wolfenstein: The New Order is the newest and upcoming Wolfenstein title currently in development under MachineGames and will be published by Bethesda. The game is the ninth installment in the Wolfenstein series and set to use the id Tech 5 engine.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is set in 1960 in an alternate universe where the Nazis actually managed to win the World War II and are the new rulers of the world. Players will be taking on the role of series protagonist William "B.J." Blazkowicz and will be tasked with launching a massive but impossible counter-offensive against the Nazis that have taken over the world.

Blazkowicz is currently injured due to a highly sensitive mission during the American war that went wrong and left Blazkowicz is a coma for 14 years. And with his unstable mental health, he is currently in an asylum which the Nazis later decide to attack to kill everyone inside.

This, however, somehow triggers Blazkowicz’s memory and he manages to escape the scene before he falls prey to the Nazis. For all we know, even Adolf Hitler is set to appear in the game, although we are not sure in what form.

As we mentioned before, Wolfenstein: The New Order will be using the id Tech engine, and although it was just a rumor in its initial days, the developing team clarified later that indeed that game will be built on the engine.

Jens Matthies, creative director at MachineGames, stated the following earlier: “We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere, as fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud.”

As of now, we already know that the game will not feature a multiplayer mode, and this was revealed by Matthies himself when he stated: “It's such a huge part of video game legacy. If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming."

“On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing. I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It's both an honor and a legacy.”

As expected, the game will be going back to its roots, and will be filled with stuff that you can still remember doing in other Wolfenstein games of the past. Expect a lot of melee kills and the ability to locate secret weapon stashes and upgrading to state-of-the-art weaponry.

As far as enemies are concerned, there will be robot dogs, super soldiers, massive Nazi robots and certain special Shock Troops. Interestingly, the devs also kept the concept of 100 Health Points limit alive and while health regeneration will be available, it will only regenerate up to 20 HP.

We are yet to know anything about the in-game weapons but expect a mash of both old and new weapons.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is set for a December release on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
