CONSOLES

Why Microsoft is including a Kinect with every Xbox One

We, as fans, have a lot of queries regarding anything that's new and garnering a lot of popularity, and the fast approaching Xbox One is no different. Taking a stab at what we'd all like to hear about, recently an Xbox One developer conducted a Q&A session on Reddit and revealed new information related to the console.

One of the recent revelations related to the Xbox One was regarding the fact that Microsoft had announced that the Kinect will be included with every Xbox One box. While this may seem to most of us as yet another business plot from Microsoft, especially when the entire thing is priced higher than the competing PS4 from Sony by a margin of $100, the developer had a more justified explanation for the decision.

According to the developer, the addition of Kinect in every box will offer developers the freedom to include unique functionality for their future games running on the console.

On asked as to what added functionality gamers might expect when they purchase One with the support of Kinect, the developer stated: "The goal with having a Kinect ship with every Xbox is to guarantee to game developers if they implement Kinect features into their games, everyone who has an Xbox will be able to experience it. I often see people dismiss the Kinect instantly because they haven't seen it work like I have. It is an integral part of the Xbox One experience."

On asked again: "Couldn't you include it in the box and not require it to be hooked up? It seems like the 2 issues are not mutually exclusive, and people uncomfortable/uninterested with the Kinect could just throw it in a closet while it's still in every box at the same time," the developer stated that the number of features on the Xbox One that make use of the Kinect is almost too many to count. "I can't imagine using the console without it. To me, I see two ways to deal with this."

"1) Not require the Kinect to be always plugged in and have all these features turned off by default.

2) Enable these features by default and turn them off if people choose to turn off the Kinect.

The first choice would undermine our guarantee to game developers."

The Xbox One is currently set for a holiday 2013 release.
