'Designated Survivor' News & Update: Continuity Of Government In Real-Life, Who Is Chosen To Become President?

ABC's most talked about TV drama series "Designated Survivor" continues to gain viewership and ratings. The show is expected to double its 18-49 rating and total audience after episode 8 airs on November 30.

"Designated Survivor" is the new ABC TV series, which gained 6.36 million of viewership and still counting under the 18-49 rating. The drama series is about a U.S. cabinet member Tom Kirkman, who became the president after the capitol was wiped out with a massive explosion.

In the first episode of the "Designated Survivor," the Cabinet member named Tom Kirkman, played by Kiefer Sutherland, was selected to not attend the State of Union Address. While watching the president's speech on TV, a massive bomb attack hits the capitol, which killed the president and everyone who was attending the event. It was later revealed that he was the "Designated Survivor," the chosen one to become the next president.

The title "Designated Survivor" is given to a potential leader that can become the president of the United States if there will be an attack during the State of Union Address. According to ABC News, the drama series is not just a fiction but in fact real.

The Continuity of the Government is a plan of the US government in case there will be a state decapitation due to a massive attack. Gale Norton, a high-ranking official, was placed in a secured location and chosen to be the "Designated Survivor" as President George W. Bush delivered his speech during the State of Union Address. The plan of securing Gale Norton was in response to the 9/11 attack since the government does not know when and where the attack would be next, News Everyday reported.

In addition, former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales recalled that he too was a "Designated Survivor" during the 2007 Joint Session of Congress. He remembers that he was taken by the Air Force Base along with people who carries black binders, designated staffers, to advise him should he assume the presidency.

Meanwhile, the possibility that the story of "Designated Survivor" could happen makes it the most anticipated TV drama series. The idea of sharing the hardships and dangers that a president faces is leading the show to gain more viewership and high ratings. Due to the fact that it is possible, people tend to be curious about what could happen in the country and who could possibly lead them.
