'Justice League Dark' Gets R-Rating, Thanks To 'Batman: The Killing Joke'! Director Jay Oliva Grateful For Matt Ryan's John Constantine

Things are about to get very dark indeed. The new trailer for "Justice League Dark" has just confirmed that the animated film will get an R-rating, and director Jay Oliva says he owes it all to "Batman: The Killing Joke".

An R-rating would certainly be a welcome aspect in "Justice League Dark", but it's not the only thing Jay Oliva is grateful about. The director also expressed gratitude over Matt Ryan's return as John Constantine (well, his voice, anyway) in the animated DC flick.

One of the first things that people will notice about the "Justice League Dark" trailer is that the DC animated flick has been given an R-rating. Jay Oliva revealed to Empire that although he had originally intended for the film to be PG-13, he also wanted to go "hard R" if he knew it would get an R-rating. Nevertheless, Oliva admitted gratitude to the recent adaptation of Alan Moore's infamous graphic novel.

"'The Killing Joke' was kind of a godsend," Jay Oliva stated, adding that the animated flick's success led to "Justice League Dark" getting an R-rating. In addition to that, the director was very happy that former "Constantine" star Matt Ryan decided to lend his voice to the film.

People are still unhappy over the cancellation of "Constantine", but that doesn't mean that Matt Ryan is done with John Constantine. Jay Oliva shared that he was initially unsure whether the actor would consider lending his voice to the character in "Justice League Dark". However, he was relieved when Ryan agreed to do the project and went out of his way for the recording.

"[Matt Ryan] came out [to L.A] and did a fantastic job," Jay Oliva said of the "Constantine" star. He added that although Ryan probably has never "done voice work" prior to the project, the actor definitely wanted to be a part of "Justice League Dark".
