Tom Clancy’s The Division has ‘potentially limitless’ gameplay

With the unveiling of the likes of DestinyThe Division and Titanfall, one thing's quite certain - the future belongs to massive open-world multiplayer RPGs. And taking Tom Clancy's The Division under consideration here, there's some more new details unveiled related to the game's open-world.

Ryan Bernard of Ubisoft Massive was recently in an interview with OXM, where he spoke about the upcoming versions of the game for both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. He also discussed the major role of player preservation in the game, and that if all is in order, The Division will easily keep players engrossed for hours.

When asked how Ubisoft intends to extend The Divison's lifespan, Bernard stated: "OK. Well, a couple of things. If you saw the video, you do see that finding dynamic content, group content is a big part of the game. So we're definitely want a challenge-ramping out in the world to encourage players to play together for better rewards as well."

"The endgame is very important to us," Bernard added. "Player retention is very important. We want the Division to be potentially limitless, unlimited gameplay, but the specifics of how we're doing that, we're saving [for another time] - we have a long time to talk about that stuff. But yes, it is important for us."

Previous to this, last month, Bernard suggested that The Division wouldn't be a "grind-fest."

"We are an RPG and the story is very important, and we want our story to be a little bit different," Bernard stated, while also adding, "we'll have an overall story arc, but we want the story-telling to be a little bit different in this game."

"We want more emergent story-telling, so as you're out in the world and fighting these events, there'll be stories attached to that, which may lead you in to the greater story. And it's more your story, it's more personalised, that can feed in to a greater storyline."

The Division is inspired by Operation Dark Winter and Directive 51 - real-world events which revealed how the society has become vulnerable, fragile and complex. The game shows a disease that spreads on Black Friday and causes the United States to collapse in five days.

The player is a part of a group called "Strategic Homeland Division (SHD)", called "The Division" for short, established to combat the threat and do whatever it takes to save what remains.

The Division will arrive in 2014 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
