'The Mummy' Release Date, News & Update: Universal Pictures Releases First Trailer for Tom Cruise Horror Flick

Last night's "The Walking Dead" was a treat for horror fans, as Universal Pictures revealed the first trailer for Tom Cruise horror flick, "The Mummy." The Alex Kurtzman-directed film is set to be released in June next year, and will reboot the "The Mummy" franchise that formerly starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Kurtzman recently spoke out about creating a cinematic universe for the likes of "The Mummy," which is set to be the beginning of a franchise. According to The Verge, the director believes in creating solid standalone films first before launching into something like a superhero mashup film. He admitted that the primary goal for "The Mummy" was to first make a great movie, and only then to create a universe.

Now that Universal Pictures releases first trailer for Tom Cruise horror flick, fans can get a first look at "The Mummy." The film also stars Sofia Boutella ("Star Trek Beyond," "Kingsman: The Secret Service") as the Mummy, and Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, a member of the mysterious Prodigium group.

Collider reports that "The Mummy" will take viewers across Middle East and into London as Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) dodges the evils of Princess Ahmanet—the Mummy herself. Princess Ahmanet is awakened in present day to avenge her wrongful death. It's up to Nick Morton to keep humanity safe from her wrath.

"The Mummy" also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson ("Jurassic World"), Courtney B. Vance, and Javier Botet. The upcoming film is produced by Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan, and Sean Daniel, with a story by Jon Spaihts and Christopher McQuarrie.

As Universal Pictures releases first trailer for Tom Cruise horror flick "The Mummy," Kurtzman explains that the upcoming film isn't just a horror film, as it's a monster movie. He says that the monster movie differs from horror flicks because it makes audiences "feel for the monster" as well. "The Mummy" arrives in theaters on June 9, 2017.
