‘X-Men’ Premiere, News & Update: Movie To Shoot In Summer 2017, Is It ‘Gambit’ Spin-Off? Or 'New Mutants' Film? Characters, Plot Details

There is buzz in movie circles that 20th Century Fox opened in Montreal, Canada, production headquarters for a new X-Men film. However, industry observers are confused which “X-Men” movie would it be?

According to Journal de Montreal, Michel Trudel, president of MELS Studios, confirmed a movie would be shot in Montreal in the coming few months. However, he added that 20th Century Fox is scouting for other possible locations before the studio makes a decision if Montreal would be the location for the new “X-Men” film, Movieweb reports.

Convincing 20th Century Fox

Michel Trudel said that MELS negotiated with 20th Century Fox for two-and-a-half months. In October, Michel Trudel went to Los Angeles to convince Fox to shoot the new “X-Men” film in the Canadian city. Apparently, an agreement was reached because the studio would occupy MELS’ Studios 2 and 3 for several months for the filming, beginning May 2017.

Because of sparse details available, other than the project being a new “X-Men" movie, there are also speculations it could be a “Gambit” spin-off. The rumor is because Simon Kinberg, a producer, said in July that there is a plan to film “Gambit” in spring 2017.

“New Mutants”

However, according to Comicbook, it would be “New Mutants,” an “X-Men” spin-off. Writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod created the concept about teenage mutants who are sarcastic and full of angst. They train at the Professor Xavier school and are made up of kids considered too young to be X-Men but mature enough to begin training so they could understand and use their profound mutant powers.

But the “New Mutants” would be a little bit more violent than the usual X-Men, according to Josh Boone, the director of the upcoming film. They would combine elements of horror and YA comedy. Rumors say the team would be made up of Magik, Mirage, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball and some lesser-known mutants from the "X-Men" comics.
