NBC's new workplace comedy focusing on superheroes just revealed a new synopsis and changed the setting of Powerless to be set on Wayne Enterprises instead.
Originally, Powerless was going to be set on an insurance company called Retcon that specializes in insurance claims in the aftermath of superhero-caused damages. The new synopsis changes the setting to Bruce Wayne's Wayne Enterprises instead.
Here's the new synopsis of Powerless from NBC:
In a world where humanity must cope with the collateral damage of Super Heroes and Super-Villains, Emily Locke (Vanessa Hudgens) begins her first day as Director of Research & Development for Wayne Security, a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises that specializes in products that make defenseless bystanders feel a little safer. Full of confidence and big ideas, Emily quickly learns that her expectations far exceed those of her new boss (Alan Tudyk) and officemates, so it will be up to her to lead the team toward their full potential and the realization that you don't need superpowers to be a hero.
The change gives Powerless more integration within the DC universe and opens up a potential for a Batman cameo in the future (even if it might seem unlikely due to licensing issues with the character). While it's nice to see more superheroes popping up in the show, the main premise of having totally normal, ordinary people in a world of superheroes can get overtaken if too many superhero connections show up. But being set on Wayne Enterprises does give the show more opportunities to showcase some office shenanigans based on high-tech gadgets and gear.
Interestingly, this means that Wayne Enterprises develops products that protect the city of Gotham against the potential havoc that can be caused by Batman and company, which makes the company similar to a protection racket as noted by Gizmodo.
Powerless will premiere on NBC on February 2, 2017 at 8:30PM EST.
