‘The Honeymooners’ News and Updates: Reboot on the Works in CBS

CBS is set to do a remake of one of TV's most iconic sitcoms, "The Honeymooners." Bob Kushell, responsible for the successful reboot of "The Muppets," will co executive produce the new show with Carl Beverly, Sarah Timberman, and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum along with Jeff Greenstein ("Mom", "Will and Grace", "Desperate Housewives" and "Friends").

The new take on the classic series will focus on two couples who are also best friends and neighbors. The group tries to adjust to a new wrinkle in their situation as one couple remarries after divorcing four years before. The original Honeymooners was based on a sketch by Jackie Gleason that originally aired on the DuMont Network's "Cavalcade of Stars" and eventually on CBS's "The Jackie Gleason Show."

It is one of the first shows in American TV that featured working class people as its main characters, set in a run-down Brooklyn apartment.  "The Honeymooners" started out as a 30 minute series in 1955 and eventually became the No. 2 show in America in its first year. The series ended after 39 episodes in 1956, but was revived sporadically by Gleason until 1978. Bob Kushell's writing credits include "3rd Rock From The Sun," "The Simpsons," and "Samantha Who."

"The Honeymooners" is not the only classic show in the development phase. Shows like "Carwash", "Sneakers", "Enemy Of the State", "Magnum P. I." and "The Lost Boys" are also in the works. In 2005, "The Honeymooners" was remade for film with Cedric,The Entertainer, Gabrielle Union, Mike Epps and Regina Hall to poor reviews and box office returns. Do you think "The Honeymooners" is going to be a hit with Bob Kushell as scribe?  Please let us know in the comments section below.
