'Psychonauts' Now Playable On PlayStation 4 After Sony Release Date Error

Although there was a prior mistake in the announcement of the official release date of “Psychonauts,” the game is now playable on PlayStation 4.

On June 5, the PlayStation Blog included “Psychonauts” in the list of game that will be launching on June 7. Later on the same Sunday, an update removed the title from the list of PS4 games to release on Tuesday. Sony apologized for the error, explaining that “Psychonauts” will be released soon, although not within the week. Fans were asked to stay tuned for the final release date.

Polygon noted that despite the supposed error, “Psychonauts” is currently available on the PlayStation Store as initially announced on June 5. The game is described as a psychic odyssey through the minds of misfits, monsters and madmen. “Psychonauts” is a classic action/adventure platformer that focuses on Razputin, a young psychic who is on a mission to join the Psychonauts, a special group of psychic secret agents from all over the world.

During Razputin’s quest to be part of the Psychonauts, he broke into Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, the group’s secret training facility. However, he realized that a mysterious enemy kidnapped the others and took their brains. Razputin must use his mind powers to hurdle several challenges like finding hidden memories, arranging emotional baggage and battling mental villains, among others.

Engadget wrote that “Psychonauts” is a one-player game created by Double Fine Productions. The game developer crowdfunded the new game earlier in 2016 with much success and was able to raise $3.8 million for its creation. In 2012, Double Fine used Kickstarter to raise funds for “Broken Age.” Recently, the company relied on Fig, a crowdfunding platform founded by former Double Fine COO Justin Bailey in 2015. Studio founder Tim Schafer is also a board member of Fig. Compared to Kickstarter, Fig allows unaccredited individuals to invest in projects, instead of merely infusing cash.

“Psychonauts” first launched for PlayStation 2 in 2005 and plans for its re-release for PlayStation 4 was first announced in January 2016. The new game is available for $9.99. Gamers should have at least 4GB available space on their hard drive for the title. A sequel is reportedly already in development for PS4, as well as a spinoff game for PlayStation VR, although the official launch dates for these have not yet been revealed.

More updates and details on “Psychonauts” are expected soon.
