Obsidian Entertainment Announces Crowdfunding Success For 'Pillar Of Eternity 2: Deadfire'

Obsidian Entertainment marks another great milestone for crowdfunding, as their "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" reportedly breaks records with a $4.4 million funding. The developer apparently received support from 33,000 backers within a few weeks only. It was reported that they originally set a goal to raise $1.1 million, but through their stretch goals, which included extra companions, multi-lingual support, and additional player ships, the developer was able to receive four times the original target amount.

According to reports, the developer's first project, "Pillars of Eternity," gathered close to $4 million during their Kickstarter funding campaign in 2012, was apparently considered as another record breaker. Sources confirmed that it continues to stay on the top 25 best-funded projects in crowdfunding website. As reported by Game Rant, the sequel was crowdfunded through Fig instead. Unlike Kickstarter, backers can only fund games and also choose to purchase shares.

"Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" showcases that Fig's approach might be more ideal for people who want to invest in video games. Obsidian Entertainment's successful campaign for the sequel project is currently treated as a huge success for the crowdfunding website. Other reports have supported news that the sequel is most successfully crowdfunded game ever.

The project's $4.4 million funding means that the developer will include a "soulbound weapon," according to Gamespot. The item will supposedly communicate with the player "throughout your adventure," says the developer. Another interesting feature in "Deadfire" is traveling by ship, allowing players to experience "open-world exploration and discovery." The player's ship will apparently be called the Defiant and is described to be a Drywoodan sloop. It will supposedly work as a mobile base for your party and will feature customization options.

According to Obsidian Entertainment, "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" will move away from the original's Drywood location. The game's crowdfunding page promises a new UI and battle mechanics. Some companions from the previous game will reportedly make a comeback in the sequel together with other small improvements. The game currently does not have an estimated release date and is still being developed.
