Modders Release Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall Enhanced Edition For FREE On GOG

You Can Get An Unofficial Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall Remaster From GOG For Free

Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall is the kind of game that not a lot of gamers might remember, but the true, hardcore veterans will - just like how old soldiers remember the wars they've been in. If you tried to play it today in its original state, it would probably be one of the jankiest experiences ever. But with this free "remaster" of the game courtesy of modders, maybe it's time you gave the game a try.

DualShockers reports that the unofficial remaster called Daggerfall Unity, which was made possible by virtue of a wide variety of mods, is now out and completely free on GOG as of the moment. This version of the game actually is an engine-replaced version of the original Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall, all in the name of making it look and play better.

Visuals are the only aspect of the game that got an overhaul, however. Content and core gameplay elements remain the same. But the immersion could be far better because while the mods don't make Daggerfall Unity (named after the Unity Engine which was used on it) look like a "modern" title by any means, it's still far, far better than what the game used to look like way back in 1996.

Here's a 47-minute gameplay showcase of Daggerfall Unity from YouTuber GamerZakh (who actually helped co-develop this version of Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall):

Officially called Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut, this unofficial remaster of the classic Elder Scrolls title actually comes easy to install with a one-click installer, writes PCGamer. All you have to do is download and install it, and it already comes pre-packed with all of the mods needed to make it look and play better. No extra effort needed from you.

The GOG Cut is basically for those who just want to jump into a new game without the headaches of manually installing mods on it. You can now get it on GOG for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11 systems, and you basically don't need any serious hardware to run it - it's a 26-year-old game, after all.

Daggerfall Unity OG Version Vs GOG Cut: Is GOG Really Easier?

To make you realize how easy it is to just start playing with the GOG Cut of Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall, here's how the original version of Daggerfall Unity needed to be set up (courtesy of PCGamer) in comparison. And boy, it can be a pain to do all of these step by step, making sure that you don't miss anything along the way.

  • Step 1: Download essential game files from this Google Drive link and unzip them to wherever you want on your PC.

  • Step 2: Download the latest version of Daggerfall Unity on Github. Be sure to pick the version compatible with your OS, as there's one compatible with 32 and 64-bit builds of Windows, Mac, and Linux.

  • Unzip all the files of Daggerfall Unity into where you put the essential game files first hand.

  • Run the game by clicking on DaggerfallUnity.exe.

If you go for Daggerfall Unity's GOG version, you do not have to do these at all. Plug and play, as they always say.
