The latest Secret Lair drop from "Magic: The Gathering," the "Chaos Vault Dandan" deck, has captured the attention of collectors and gamers in the community.
Surprisingly, the new deck sold out in just a few minutes. The resale price surge followed, depriving others of the chance to buy the deck.
Scalpers Drive Prices Up
Inspired by the classic 1v1 Dandân format introduced in 1996, the 80-card deck features the iconic Dandân from the Arabian Nights expansion. Priced at $99, the set includes 46 borderless foil cards and 34 retro-frame cards, marking a rare instance of a full deck being sold through the Secret Lair platform. The product sold out in just 27 minutes.

Shortly after the release, resellers began listing the deck on platforms like eBay and TCG Player at significantly inflated prices, according to Polygon. Current listings average around $242, with some reaching as high as $300.
According to Secret Lair senior director Lindsey Bartell, while systems are in place to limit bots, human scalpers remain difficult to control, leading to limited access for genuine players.
Secret Lair's Experimental Strategy
Secret Lair continues to operate as an experimental arm of Wizards of the Coast, often introducing unconventional products and pricing models. The Chaos Vault drop, described as "Secret Lair's Secret Lair," pushes these boundaries further by offering a full playable deck instead of individual collectible cards.
Previous releases, such as Prints Charming, also explored unique pricing and presentation strategies, generating mixed reactions among fans.
Community Frustration and Feedback
Players quickly voiced frustration on Reddit and social media, particularly those who were unable to complete purchases despite having the item in their cart. Some said that each person should just be limited to two purchases.
Here's what some "MTG" fans said about the recent scalping scenario.
"That was about as fast as I expected."
"The low queue times and no low stock warning were similar to the holiday countdown box."
"I had 1 minute in queue then got the sold out message. Feelsbad."
"Sold out like 3 seconds before my place in the que popped.suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper salty."
"I got sold out message. when I submitted final payment screen. Assuming I got shut out. Seems weird to get that far only to have it disappear at last screen. Is this normal?"
"I got in the queue like 10 minutes ago thinking I had a chance, that's disappointing. People buying multiple is kinda dumb."
