There's Still An Undiscovered Secret In The Tower Of Sisyphus In Returnal, Says Dev

Housemarque Challenges Returnal Players To Find One Secret In Sisyphus Tower

If you've been playing Returnal a lot lately and trying out the new Tower of Sisyphus Endless mode, there's still a secret in there that you likely missed - and a lot of other players aside from you.

That was the claim of Eevi Korhonen, who served as the PS5 exclusive's senior narrative designer. As reported by GameRant, she's referring to the aforementioned secret as "a nice philosophical reference," which means it's far more than a simple easter egg in-game. She also infers that a lot of players might not even recognize it when they do find it - perhaps only the true eagle-eyed ones can do on their own, while others might need help recognizing what they just found.

The story of Returnal is something that has more or less defined the PS5 exclusive when it first launched. And it still is one of the best things about it. Its narrative is presented in a non-linear, complex way that not a lot of AAA titles do these days. This narrative decision is also something that complements the game's nature as an unpredictable roguelike.

Either way, Korhonen says that the secret that she says she hopes players to find is something that eventually gets put onto Reddit - the place where a lot of Returnal's secrets were being posted and debated on (via VideoGamesChronicle).

Housemarque added the Tower Of Sisyphus game mode into Returnal alongside the free DLC Ascension, which also brought co-op into the game. As elaborated on the PlayStation blog, Tower Of Sisyphus tasks the players to go as high as possible up the titular tower while facing immeasurable challenges along the way.

The climb itself is basically endless, and anybody who tries it will die as things get more difficult with time. If you're a little bit of a masochist, you can try this Endless mode to see how far you can go before you eventually give up. There's a leaderboard that will tally your performance and compare it among the best.

Returnal is out now for the PS5 worldwide. If you really want to play it, maybe you can check out our PS5 buying guide to help you get your hands on Sony's current-gen console.

(SPOILER WARNING) Returnal's Biggest Secrets That So Many Still Haven't Found

Look, Returnal is a very, very difficult game. We imagine that while playing through it, the only thing on your mind is surviving - leaving you with barely any time to explore and hunt for secrets. As such, there's still a myriad of undiscovered ones remaining in the game that so many players haven't found yet - alongside whatever it is that the Tower Of Sisyphus is still hiding.

GameRant listed a few of these yet-to-be-discovered secrets. Be warned, though, that if you are hunting for these secrets, then this is your SPOILER WARNING. TURN BACK NOW.

  • Secret ending: the game stays true to its head-scratching nature with a secret ending, one of two that the PS5 exclusive has. Many players say this is the "true ending" to the game, wherein players are tasked to unlock a car they find before reaching the end. To unlock it (and the ending), they need to craft a key using six Sunface Fragments.

  • Reconstructors: Whenever you die in Returnal, you get sent back to your ship. That could be a very annoying prospect, but a Reconstructor can help you with that - for the price of six Ethers. If you have the means to pay, getting into a Reconstructor will ensure that you spawn in its location whenever you die.

  • Hidden xenoglyph: Platinum trophy hunters will need to get all Xenoglyphs - every single one of them - to get that trophy. But one xenoglyph is basically hidden in plain sight in Biome 3, that so many players miss it out because they're too focused on the Reconstructor. Its location is on a wall right behind the Reconstructor.
