War Thunder, the multiplayer vehicular combat sim developed by Gaijin Entertainment, just got a new patch that will surely make fans happy. The aptly named "Air Superiority" update adds new vehicles to the game, most notably the F-15 and Su-27 fighter jets for the USA and Soviet Union, respectively.

New Vehicles

A bunch of new vehicles have been introduced to War Thunder via the Air Superiority update, with the USA's F-15 Eagle stealing the show. This premium fighter jet is equipped with a pair of Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engines, which allows it to reach top speeds of Mach 2.3! Its speed is not only its headlining feature because the F-15 is also fitted with AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-7 Sparrow Missiles for true air superiority.

Rivaling the USA's F-15 Eagle is the USSR's Su-27. Boasting incredible speeds thanks to its powerful Saturn AL-31F engine, the Su-27 can go head-to-head against any aircraft in the game. Its vast array of missiles makes this fighter jet superior for aerial combat, though the Su-27's air-to-surface capabilities leave much to be desired.

Despite its name, War Thunder's Air Superiority update includes a bevy of ground vehicles as well. The M1A2 SEP V2 is the latest American Main Battle Tank (MBT) in the game. This rather unusually looking tank has metal slats attached to its side, which protects it from HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-tank) shells and ATGMs (Anti-tank Guided Missiles).

The British Challenger 3 TD is the first Rank VIII MBT in War Thunder. Its main feature, the L/55 A1 smoothbore cannon, can use DM53 APFSDS, HEAT-FS, and HE-TF rounds to make quick work of the enemy.

New Features

Each vehicle in War Thunder has a ton of modifications that players can research and purchase. That is why it is understandable that beginners may find it hard to utilize these modifications to great effect.

Well, Gaijin Entertainment has introduced a new feature called "Training Missions" that allows players to test new modifications before heading to an actual fight. This feature is available in the vehicle modification window.

In terms of improvements, vehicles that are destroyed will now display a new skull destruction icon in Ground Realistic Battles. Furthermore, the company has made a graphical overhaul of all the fire effects in the game to improve realism.

Other features and improvements include:

MECHANICS

  • The ability to use universal backups in the respawn window without needing to activate them first in the modification window before a battle has been added.

  • Contextual hints about the use of certain mechanics and equipment of ground vehicles have been added and occur when certain conditions are met.

    • When trying to use the target lock of radar/IRST from third-person view, if the target lock is available only from the sights or binoculars, a hint recommending to switch to the sights is shown.

    • When trying to use the target lock of radar/IRST from the sights or binoculars, if the target is missing, a hint recommending to point the sight to the target is shown. The successful target lock from the sights or binoculars is counted as a successful hint show.

GRAPHICAL

  • Additional detail to the effects of large-caliber hits (from 80 mm) have been added.

  • When a tank explodes, there is now a chance of fuel leakage and a subsequent fire.

SOUND

  • Ultra-low frequencies have been added to the sounds of explosions, gun shots, and aircraft engines to give more richness to the game mix.

  • The sounds of machine guns on ground and naval vehicles have been adjusted. More dynamic and characteristic sound features have been added to each weapon.

War Thunder Air Superiority Update is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
