Mauga is the latest tank hero introduced in Overwatch 2. Although he has all of the makings of a good tank, he is also quite capable of dispatching enemies with ease similar to what most of the DPS heroes can do. This is evidenced by a number of players, with one rising from the Bronze tier in Ranked all the way to the Top 100!

Too Overpowered

One of the major changes in Overwatch 2 is the shift from a 6v6 format down to just 5v5, with each team consisting of two DPS heroes, two supports, and only one tank. The main reason for doing this is to significantly reduce the time it takes for matches to finish. To compensate for the lineup change, tank heroes have received considerable buffs to make the role count.

Roadhog got beefier and now has a new utility that lets him slow enemies down in a small area. Junker Queen is a new tank hero in Overwatch 2 that acts as an "offensive" tank, with abilities that allow her to deal damage over time, leaving her opponents with no chance to escape.

While the other tank heroes in the game are special in their own unique ways, Mauga is just a cut above the rest. As evidenced by user imp_romani on X/Twitter, they were able to climb from Bronze all the way to Rank 88 (out of 100) using Mauga as their main tank hero.

Granted that the said player has a Master and Diamond Rank for DPS and Support, indicating that they know how to play well in a team setting, imp_romani proves that Mauga is just too broken in the current state of the game.

User imp_romani is not the only one who has experienced great success with the "overpowered" tank hero. Long-time DPS player Metro has cracked the Top 10 using Mauga as well.

What are the possible reasons that have contributed to Mauga's rise to the upper echelons in Overwatch 2? For one, Mauga has enough firepower to decimate his opponents with relative ease. Those who know how to utilize "Gunny" and "Cha-Cha" to great effect can make quick work of the enemy for sure!

Aside from that, Mauga is nearly impossible to stop once he charges at his opponents via Overrun. While his side-to-side movement is limited while he is charging, he cannot be affected by crowd control effects, such as Doomfist's Rocket Punch (stun) and Brigitte's Shield Bash (knockback).

Speaking of unstoppable, Mauga becomes invincible whenever he has dedicated healers who follow him wherever he goes. When Mercy and Ana provide consistent healing, for example, Mauga becomes too difficult to deal with.

Nerf Imminent?

Whether Mauga's overpowered status is intentional or not, Blizzard might make adjustments that can reduce this tank hero's effectiveness, especially in Ranked play.

Right now, players almost always choose Mauga as the tank hero for the team. If Blizzard wants to maintain hero diversity, some nerfs need to be implemented.

What do you think? Do you agree that Mauga is just way too overpowered in the current meta? What can you say about some players using Mauga to crack the Top 100 in Competitive play?
