The controversial self-heal mechanic that would allow DPS and tank heroes in Overwatch 2 to recover from damage themselves was apparently taken out of context. No less than Game Director, Aaron Keller, confirmed this in a series of tweets.

Out of Context

For those who do not know, a blog post was released not long ago that revealed some changes players can expect in Season 9. One of those changes sparked massive controversy among the community. What is it? Well, the development team is teasing the idea that DPS and tank heroes in the game will be able to heal themselves when they are out of combat.

This idea was supposed to help support heroes like Mercy and Ana sustain the team better by only focusing on heroes that are actively taking damage, while others run to safety so that they can get back into action with full health.

Having said that, the self-healing mechanic is just a part of a much bigger change in the game. According to Keller, the development team is also looking at the role of DPS heroes in securing kills, and how overall damage can potentially spike out of control.

Keller said in a follow-up tweet that it was a mistake to talk about the self-heal mechanic alone and that it should be mentioned along with the other adjustments. He concluded that he and his team are looking forward to discussion about the balancing changes in Season 9 sometime in the near future.

Not Convinced

Despite the clarification, some Overwatch 2 players are not convinced. Fans took to Twitter to respond to Keller's recent tweets. User Kubaxter said that it does not matter if the self-healing mechanic was taken out of context. The mechanic itself is a "terrible change" that can ruin the balance of Blizzard's hero shooter.

Another user explained how the proposed mechanic could tip the scales over to some heroes more than others. "Flankers will benefit from the self-healing far more than brawlers for example," said user zackkoeck.

User BallerNine9 has a more optimistic take. They said that if the change is bad and it receives a lot of pushback from the community, then Blizzard may be forced to just revert it.

But what do you think? Is the proposed self-heal mechanic in Overwatch 2 Season 9 a good idea or not? Let us know in the comments.
