Evolve News: Goliath Monster's Skill System Revealed

New Details on Evolve's Goliath Spill Out at PAX East

As you might've heard, Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock was at PAX East this past weekend to show off its alien shooter Evolve. The studio has already offered up more than a few details on the game's various hunter characters like Markov and Griffin, so their time at PAX was all about the Goliath, Evolve's star monster, and one of the playable characters.

The creature's physical appearance now changes based on what abilities players have equipped the beast with, of which there are four - a charge attack, a leap attack, Godzilla-esque fire breath, and the ability to hurl boulders and chunks of earth.

The game's new system was put in place after players were seemingly confused by the former system. Described Executive Producer Denby Grace to Polygon, "You can choose to spread your skill points across three abilities or max one of those abilities up. It's really made your choices much broader. It has made for some really, really interesting strategies."

Scarfing down on small animals is still a requirement if players want their Goliath to grow up big and strong, but reaching gigantic proportions comes at the risk of being easier for hunters to spot you.

With the right diet, the Goliath can take on his namesake. The studio's Brandon Yanez had previously described the creature as, "an absolute beast...If he stood fully up, he'd be in the 30s. He's really big...The Goliath is an innately strong and powerful creature, but players will be able to buff him up as they play."

The Goliath is evidently a messy eater, as hunters can stalk the alien by following the carcasses left over from the beast's snacking. If their noses aren't sharp, they can look to the skies and look for carrion birds that have managed to spot the rotting meat.

"It goes really deep. A lot deeper than you initially think," said Grace.

Evolve is expected on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this fall.
