Spyro will return in 2027 in "Spyro: A Realm Beyond," a new game set in a previously unseen world that emphasizes free-flight exploration and brings back original voice actor Tom Kenny as the purple dragon.

Announced during the recent Xbox Games Showcase, "Spyro: A Realm Beyond" is a brand-new mainline entry developed by Toys for Bob, the studio behind "Spyro Reignited Trilogy."

It is the first fully original Spyro adventure in nearly two decades, following 2008's last new installment. The game is slated for release in Spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Setion 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2, according to Variety.

The game is set in a new realm, described as a strange and wondrous world where Spyro becomes stranded and must find a way home while defending the land from an invading force known as the Scavs.

Early Footage of 'Spyro: A Realm Beyond'

Early footage shows varied landscapes with large vertical spaces, towering landmarks, and open skies designed to support more expansive traversal. Developers have indicated that this new setting is built to highlight Spyro's expanded movement and to reward exploration across both ground and air.

A core feature of "Spyro: A Realm Beyond" is what Toys for Bob calls true dragon flight, letting players take to the sky at will instead of relying on limited gliding or flight-only stages.

Players can transition from running on the ground to soaring through the air with a button press, chaining dives, climbs, and tight turns to navigate the environment in multiple layers. This system is intended to make flight a central mechanic tied to exploration and level design, rather than a restricted bonus activity.

Spyro's character model has been updated with a larger wingspan and other visual adjustments to reflect his enhanced aerial abilities while preserving his recognizable look, PCGamesN reported.

A Redesigned Spyro for Modern Gamers

The redesigned dragon appears in both cinematic and gameplay footage, including scenes of mid-run takeoff into full flight over forests and cliffs. Developers have emphasized maintaining continuity with the classic design while modernizing details for current-generation hardware.

Tom Kenny, who originally voiced Spyro in earlier titles, is confirmed to return as the English voice of the character in "Spyro: A Realm Beyond." Publishers and media outlets note that Kenny's involvement is meant to retain one of the series' most recognizable elements as the franchise reenters the market.

Alongside the returning voice, the game introduces a new primary villain and fresh supporting characters within the new realm, expanding the series' cast for the first time in years, as per IGN.
