"Starfield" has received a new patch on the PS5 that targets several crash-related issues that have affected players since the game launched on Sony's console.

The latest update, identified on PS5 as version 1.16.242 for many users, is now available to download and installs automatically for most players connected online. This patch follows a series of rapid hotfixes Bethesda has issued over the past month in response to widespread reports of crashes and stability problems on the platform.

The studio previously acknowledged the issues publicly and promised focused fixes after some users described the PS5 version as "unplayable," according to Push Square.

A Patch To Fix 'Starfield's' Crash-Related Issues

According to patch notes and Bethesda's recent statements, the new PS5 update addresses multiple, clearly defined crash scenarios rather than broad, unspecified stability tweaks.

One fix resolves a crash that could occur when viewing or managing the game's Creations menu, including content that contains legacy data.

Another fix targets crashes tied to autosaves, where the game could unexpectedly close during automatic saving, and also addresses issues triggered when removing certain item types in Outpost mode.

This patch builds on a sequence of earlier PS5 updates, including version 1.000.003, which was pushed as an emergency hotfix for "Enhanced" settings on the PS5 Pro, and version 1.000.004, which extended crash mitigation measures to all PS5 models.

The PS5 Pro–specific patch focused on resolving crashes when using higher-end visual settings, while Bethesda indicated that an additional hotfix would follow for broader PS5 crashes and freezes.

The subsequent 1.000.004 update then included a fix for a crash that could occur while viewing the load order screen, alongside several other crash and stability fixes, Games Radar reported.

Reports from outlets tracking the patches note that Bethesda's updates are also aimed at improving general performance consistency on PS5, in an effort to reduce random crashes during exploration, menu navigation, and base building.

Players Requesting Refunds or Paused Play

Earlier coverage highlighted that some players had requested refunds or paused play until stability improved, prompting Bethesda to prioritize these fixes soon after launch on the platform.

While the latest patch is designed to alleviate key crash scenarios, the developer has not stated that all technical issues on PS5 are resolved, and further updates remain possible as monitoring continues.

Bethesda's response to the PS5 issues mirrors its broader post-launch support strategy for "Starfield," which has already seen multiple stability and quality-of-life patches across platforms.

The studio has framed these updates as part of an ongoing live-service style support cadence, with more performance and bug-fix updates planned throughout 2026.

In earlier communications, Bethesda encouraged players to keep the game updated and to submit detailed crash reports and support tickets, which the team says help identify specific problem scenarios on PS5.

These reports, alongside platform-side telemetry, are informing which crashes get prioritized in each new patch, suggesting that further targeted fixes are likely as more data comes in from the console version, as per Hacker Games.
