Carmageddon Returns via Kickstarter

After finally reacquiring rights to the game, original developer Stainless Games promises to re-deliver all the car-nage and moto-mayhem in Carmageddon: Reincarnation.

Originally released in 1997, Carmageddon is half racing sim, and two thirds demolition derby. Before the Grand Theft Auto series let you beat up hookers and carjack, Carmageddon set the bar by encouraging the player to mow down pedestrians and wreck your opponent's cars.

Upon its release, Carmageddon was banned in certain countries, and had to undergo alterations in order to finally be released. Even the Pope called for it to be banned. Despite the controversy, the game did stand out technologically. It was among the first games to feature realistic physics, and an open 3D world environment. The series managed to sell over 2 million copies.

What's to be included in the re-boot? Stainless's kickstarter site promises that, "the new game will be inspired by the classis environments, cars, drivers and power-ups from the original, but dragged screaming and kicking into the current state of rendered art. And of course, there will be a bunch of brand new STUFF too, including true rag-doll pedestrians and physics-based power-ups that let you mess with their limbs whilst wiping away the tears - of laughter!"

A multitude of rewards are promised to donors of various dollar amounts, from something as simple as getting your name in the credits for $1, to flying to the UK to meet with the Stainless Games design team and have an opponent designed on your likeness for a donation of $10,000.

Established in 2009, Kickstarter over 200 million dollars and almost 2 million people been pledged money to various projects, including music, films, comics, etc.
