'Crysis 3' On Wii U "Had to Die," Says Crytek CEO

"Crysis 3" was almost released on the Wii U but was ultimately cancelled, according to Crytek CEO Cerat Yerli.

Speaking with Gamesbeat, Yerli said that Crytek had a working version of "Crysis 3" on the Wii U, but a lack of publishing/marketing support from EA and Nintendo meant Crytek had to drop the port: "We were very close to launching it," said Yerli. "But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn't launch on the Wii U ourselves - we don't have a publishing license - Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die."

Rumors and rogue comments last year went back and forth on whether "Crysis 3" would or even could run on a Wii U. By August 2012, Crysis definitively announced the game would not be released on the platform. In the wake of that announcement, which occured before Wii U's specs were confirmed, many assumed that the Wii U simply wouldn't be able to handle "Crysis 3." Given the series' repuatation for demanding hardware requirements, it wouldn't have been a stretch for many to assume that Crytek couldn't make a version that the platform could handle: As it turns out, the "Crysis 3" Wii U issues were caused by a completely different type of technicality.
