Yahoo Acquires Game Infrastructure Software Maker PlayerScale

Chief Executive Officer for start-up game development software PlayerScale Jesper Jensen writes in an open letter that it has been purchased by Yahoo today.

"Today is a great day," writes Jensen. "We are happy to announce the next big step toward our goal of building the best possible gaming infrastructure platform: we have been acquired by Yahoo!"

PlayerScale develops infrastructure software for cross-platform gaming in order for developers and publishers the ability to scale titles across casual, social and mobile platforms quickly and seamlessly. It incorporates a data analytics tool that provides developers with information to understand and track user behavior along with helping with revenue. Flash, Unity 3D, C++, .Net, Android (JAVA), iOS(Objective-C) and HTML5 are all supported by PlayerScale.

Developers that make use of the software include 505 Games(Naughty Bear and Sniper Elite V2) and Con Artist Games (The Last Stand and Crush The Castle).

The company has over 150 million users across four thousand titles from over two thousand developers since being founded in 2011, something that caught Yahoo's eye.

"We intend to continue to support and grow PlayerScale's technology, and we look forward to building great new experiences on Yahoo! Using the PlayerScale platform," says a Yahoo representative in a statement.

According to reports, seven people will make the transition to Yahoo as part of the transaction but Jensen said in his letter that the platform will continue to support "the same great games" and "will only get better from here."

This comes as Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer purchased microblogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion earlier this week. Through the deal, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business with its 100 million users "per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up," according to a release from both companies.

"You only do an acquisition of this size and scale if you find an exceptional company which Tumblr is," Mayers tells reporters. "Part of our strategy here is to let Tumblr be Tumblr."
