Mixed emotions dawned upon the fans of the hit crime detective show as the creators have finally revealed the air date of the "Sherlock" Season 4. However, this may also be its last season.

No need accessing your mind palace to remember the date, as the new season of "Sherlock" will come with the new year. In an announcement, the producers have stated that the much-awaited "Sherlock" Season 4 will be coming on January 1 next year.

The last season of the show was aired in 2014, so it would have been three years of break when "Sherlock" Season 4 airs next year. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the role of the titular detective, said that the story of the first episode in the season will somehow explain the hiatus that the show partook. The decorated actor added that "Sherlock" Season 4 will make up for the long break, with all the exciting events and twists that await its fans.

The show's long-running villain, Moriarty, will make a comeback in the "Sherlock" Season 4. Andrew Scott will still be reprising his role. Additionally, the creators have mentioned that the upcoming season will be much darker than the previous installments, which was reaffirmed by the trailer.

Previously, it has been rumored that Tom Hiddleston will be joining the already star-studded cast of "Sherlock." He was said to portray one of the detective's brothers. However, Cumberbatch quickly dismissed this rumor and confirmed that Hiddleston was not cast for a role in "Sherlock" Season 4.

Meanwhile, aside from "Sherlock" Season 4, casting news for the "Sherlock" movie newly includes actor Bob Brydon to portray Inspector Lestrade, the fictional head of Scotland Yard. Previous reports have stated that Will Ferrell and John Reilly will be playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively.
