Captain Olimar returning in the new Smash Bros. game

Nintendo has confirmed that the good Captain Olimar and his crew of pikmin are primed to return in the next Smash Bros. game, which is set to hit the Wii U and handheld 3DS.

Nintendo added pics of the Captain and his pikmin crew over at the official Smash Bros. web site taking on a number of other Smash regulars.

It hasn't been confirmed, but it's reasonable to assume that his fighting style will remain the same, comanding his Pikmin legion to fight his battles for him. Chances are good he'll be joined by some of the new titular creatures that will feature in Pikmin 3, specifically, the brutish rock pikmin, and the flying pikmin. The more the merrier. Maybe there'll even be an appearance by Olimar's Pikmin 3 replacements; Aph, Brittany, and Captain Charlie.

Olimar technically made his Smash debut as a trophy in Melee, but wasn't a playable character until Brawl. On his own, Olimar was a fairly weak fighter, using standard chops and charges. It was when he commanded his pikmin of all the colors of the rainbow that he could become truly devestating in the right hands.

The captain will be joined by Smash veterans Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Pit, and newcomers Mega Man, WiiFit trainer, and the Villager from Animal Crossing, with more characters no doubt on the way.

Nintendo first unveiled the new Smash game during an episode of Nintendo direct. As one of the more popular exclusive series for the company, it's hoped that the game will be able to help pull the Wii U out of its slump. Though, under the directional development of Namco Bandai, not a whole lot of information has been provided on what players can expect from the new game.

Super Smash Bros. is slated to hit both the Wii U and the handheld 3DS some time in 2014.
