Xbox One Controller vs. Sony DualShock 4: Buttons, feel and beyond

Fans all around the world have already been introduced to the next generation of console gaming in Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. While all the comparisons between the two have involved the consoles’ exterior design and features and interior specs, hardly anything has been mentioned about the two different, modified game controllers that will arrive with the consoles. As of now, while Xbox One is set to arrive with a new controller, and the PS4 will offer the modified DualShock 4 controller. While we wait to handle the consoles ourselves, a comparison needs to be made between both the controllers, and try and find out who ranks above the other.

Here’s a complete preview and comparison between both the controllers and what they might offer in the long run:

If a comparison can be struck between the Xbox 360 controller and that of the Xbox One, it's that the new controller is much sleeker. The idea of slimming out the controller is to make the controller more adaptable to the hands of the player and offer a natural feel. The routine X, Y, A and B buttons have been altered as the buttons are no longer colored, apart from for the letters on the buttons. The Xbox symbol is also now on the top instead of the center, alongside the addition of automatic motors that have been built into the triggers and the pads on the bottom of the device, making the controller vibrate.

The thumb sticks also have a new approach and look sleek in accordance with the entire controller, with the battery compartment being shifted to the inside the controller as opposed to a pack we saw during the 360 era. Coupled with a smaller size, the Xbox One controller is a real improvement over Microsoft's past controllers.

Now heading over to the DualShock 4 controller for Sony’s PlayStation 4, it seems like a lot of noteworthy changes were made to the new controller, after Sony kept the controller fairly similar to that of the PlayStation 2 and 3.

The device is said to be more comfortable than the previous PS controllers with a sort of cylindrical design. Also the device’s triggers and shoulder buttons have been improvised upon to offer a more natural feel.

With the new controller, Sony has shifted PS button to the bottom of the controller, alongside an added touch-pad in the middle of the controller. Note here that the touch pad is itself a button and can be pressed. The newly introduced share button has been placed at the top left of the device.

The Share button, of course, is intended for sharing videos and can record gameplay footage that can later be shared via streaming or uploading it to YouTube. The new options button combines Start and Select buttons into one.

Both the controllers have their own added advantages, but in the long run, it seems like the DualShock 4 is at least a step ahead of its Xbox One counterpart, but that only time will tell if that proves to be true.

Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are set for a release later this year.
