While it's widely perceived by now that there have been many casualties throughout the year 2016, there have been a few miracles as well. One of them is definitely the release of the new "DOOM," which is critically acclaimed for returning the franchise to no-nonsense shooting action while adding new things to bring new life to the old formula. "DOOM" has indeed been resurrected.
For those who wish to dig deeper, the YouTube channel Noclip has been releasing half-hour episodes of a new documentary series called "DOOM Resurrected," which follows the conception and development of "DOOM." Noclip, a YouTube channel run by Danny O'Dwyer, a video game journalist formerly employed by GameSpot mostly known for hosting shows on the website. After leaving GameSpot, O'Dwyer started Noclip is a crowdfunded media company that creates in-depth documentaries about video games and the people behind them. He was nominated for Trending Gamer of the Year in The Game Awards 2016 for his on-camera efforts. He had previously done a two-part documentary series on "Rocket League" before tackling "DOOM."
This three-part series looks at the seemingly unlikely revival of the "DOOM" franchise, especially since the legendary developer behind it, id Software, had been undergoing a sort of identity crisis with its dormancy during much of the 2000's after the release of "DOOM 3" and "Quake 4," its acquisition by Zenimax, the lukewarm reception for "Rage," and most of its figureheads having left for other pastures.
With the rest of the gaming world having relegated id Software as a has-been whose way past its prime, the release of the new "DOOM" was such a pleasant surprise, but its development was wrought with difficulties along the way. The first part talks about the people behind id Software and what they were up to after the glory days of the late 90's. The second part talks about the decisions regarding the game design of the new "DOOM."
As of this writing, the third part of the series has not been posted yet, but it's expected to be up shortly. From the quality of the production to the honesty in the interviews, Noclip is a YouTube channel worth subscribing and even donating to through its Patreon page.
