Call of Duty: Ghosts News - Screenshots Show Onslaught DLC's Maps, and Nightfall, Next Episode of Extinction Mode

A Closer Look at Call of Duty: Ghosts' Onslaught DLC, and What It's Bringing to the Table

After a fan who noticed his local GameStop staff had decided to put out a poster a bit early, it's been confirmed the poster was legit, announced that Call of Duty: Ghosts' first DLC is on the way. Infinity Ward and Activision provided a nice 'lil trailer earlier this week showing off what the game's first DLC, Onlsaught, will have to offer, with new maps for the game's multiplayer and modes, as well as a new weapon. In case things moved a bit quick for you, how about a closer look?

New screens are out showing a few different angles on the new maps and whatnot. You can check out the shots below, complete with a recap of what the boys at Infinity Ward covered in the trailer, like the special actions players can perform once they complete a field order.

First up, Bayview. A sceninc beachfront community, Bayview has quickly devolved into a ghost town full of plenty of places to take cover. If you look in the background at the first picture, you'll see a giant Naval Destroyer, primed and ready to go. Complete a field order here, and you'll be able to call in an artillery strike, launched right from that bad boy.

Next, Fog. Creepy right? Abandoned campsites in the woods tend to have that effect. Fog might be the most original of the maps, and will likely go down as one of the most played maps of the DLC, if not the entire game. Why? Because it's the only one that lets you live out a bloody nightmare, hacking up players as one of horror's most grisly of boogeyman. Complete a field order, and you gain the ability to play as "Halloween's" Michael Myers, complete with the iconic music and an axe for up close and personal kills.

Below, you'll find Containment. See that precariously parked truck dead center atop the bridge? The one with all those radioactive warning signs? It's carrying a nuclear payload, and yep, you can blow that up if you want. Complete a field order, and you can call in an airstrike to blow that baby sky high, showering everyone with lovely radioactive fallout, not to mention killing everyone in the immediate area.

Last, but not least, here's Ignition, a remake of Scrapyard from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (and if the rumors are to be believed, it won't be the last). Like the namesake of the map, if you complete a field order here, you can activiate a test engine that ignites and burns enemies in the area to a crisp. For players who prefer their meat well done.

Infinity Ward also discussed some new alien enemies coming to the game's Extinction mode. Below, you'll see what's soon to be a very annoying creature, the Phantom, which is capable of leaping a few dozen feet in the air with ease. It also disappears mide-leap, making it difficult to track.

Lastly, you have the Breeder, a crab or arachnid like alien that can use its sharp claws to stab soliders that get too close. Infinity Ward hasn't provided too many details on this new creature, but given its namesake, expect to it be able to produce other alien entities.

Beyond the maps and creature, the DLC also adds in a new weapon that the team is describing as two in one. The Maverick rifle can function as an assault rifle, or a sniper rifle, so it works on two levels for whatever your play style is.

Onslaught hits Xbox platforms first, later this month, January 28. Expect it to hit the rest of the platforms after in late February. No pricing details just yet, but I'm sure the DLC packs are free for Season Pass holders. According to the Pass, the next DLC will be Devestation, followed by Invasion, and finally, Nemesis. Additional content gained with the Pass include instant access to the map originally only offered as a pre-order bonus, Free Fall, and the Team Leader digital content pack, which "includes a unique MP character head" sporting the Ghost mask, weapon camo, reticle, player patch, player card and player background, all of which will be playable in-game upon purchase.

For anyone who has the game on either PS3 or Xbox 360 and plans on upgrading to the next-gen systems, anyone who buys the pass by the end of May 2014, all the content comes with you to the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Call of Duty: Ghosts takes place in a near future following an attack from space that leaves Los Angeles virtually wiped out, and the United States' infrastructure devastated. Years later, the country is invaded by a new superpower, a conglomerate of South American nations calling itself the "Federation." What's left of America's special forces have come together to form the titular "Ghosts," and it's up to them to wage guerrilla warfare against the Federation in order to protect what remains of the United States, and drive the Federation out.

Beyond the campaign, the game's multiplayer mode, which promises a slew of different customization options for weapons, character camos, and more. Over 30 new weapons are included alongside old favorites like the UMP45 and the M4A1.

Despite not the best reviews ever for a Call of Duty game, Ghosts was a hit right out of the gate. We learned recently that Ghosts is the most played multiplayer game in the world, and was also the top-selling game in November, the month when both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One released.
