iPhone 8 Release Date, News & Update: Premium iPhone 8 units to feature Samsung’s curved OLED screens; Apple enhances sensing technology?

Apple is set to adapt an edge-to-edge screen for its upcoming iPhone 8 smartphone line. Latest news confirmed the tech company's plans to proceed with a curved OLED screen iPhone unit utilizing Samsung's curved display technology.

Samsung Display, a unit of the South Korean company Samsung, will supply Apple with OLED displays for the soon-to-be-released iPhone 8. A source confirmed Apple's supply order in an interview with The Korea Herald where Samsung will provide around 70 million to 100 million plastic OLED screens to the Cupertino-based firm.

Speculations posted on the same news site indicated that the iPhone 8 units with curved OLED screens might be a premium model for Apple's upcoming flagship smartphone. Given Samsung's limited production capacity for its curved OLED screens, only a handful of iPhone 8 curved devices will be released to the market.

The said iPhone 8 curved display line is just one of the smartphone models that Apple will unveil in 2017. Previous reports hinted of the company's plans to release several variants such as a 5-inch iPhone 8 model and a 5.8-inch smartphone with an edge-to-edge screen and a bezel-less front panel.

Apart from the curved OLED screens, the premium iPhone 8 might also feature a new sensing technology to further maximize the iPhone 8's new display. Touching the edge of the screen may potentially activate some of the new smartphone's functions.

However, it is unclear if the company will decide to introduce a panel of quick commands located on the edge of the new iPhone 8 screen. The source stated, "Apple may not adopt this technology."

Meanwhile, the latest news of Apple's plastic OLED screen orders from Samsung coincides with an earlier Barclay Research report uncovered by Mac Rumors. Analysts Blayne Curtis, Christopher Hemmelgarn, Thomas O'Malley, and Jerry Zhang highlighted the features of an iPhone smartphone design with a larger screen, as well as a borderless front panel with an OLED display technology for the 5.8-inch iPhone 8 model.

Apple's iPhone 8 is speculated for release in September 2017. Learn more about the upcoming smartphone's rumored features in the clip below:
