Batman: Arkham Origins is the third entry into the great Arkham series of Batman games, starting with Arkham Asylum in 2009. Origins came out late last year and is now getting its first major story add-on DLC, Cold, Cold Heart starring Mr. Freeze.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment promises an "extensive story add-on, [where] players will unearth the tragic origin story of Mr. Freeze and learn how he earned his role as one of Batman's arch nemeses," and it's coming out April 22.
There's a great teaser trailer included below, introducing Mr. Freeze to Gotham City. In the Cold, Cold Heart players will don the Batman Extreme Environment (XE) suit and use gadgets such as Thermal Gloves and Thermocharged Batarangs-an arsenal that sounds specifically tailored to deal with Batman's new foe.
According to the press release, the DLC "introduces several hours of all-new content in which players will battle through punishing, icy landscapes to witness Mr. Freeze's heart-pumping first encounter with the Dark Knight."
The Batman: Arkham series somewhat revolutionized the way we think of Batman games, much like the Christopher Nolan trilogy reinvented the franchise on the big screen. They are gritty, well-made, look extremely good, and have fun combat- clearly sharing much in common with the new films despite following their own story.
Batman: Arkham Origins is a prequel to both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City despite being the newest game. It features a younger, less experienced version of Batman and development was moved away from Rocksteady Studios for the first time and exclusively to Warner Bros. Games Montreal.
Cold, Cold Heart will be released on April 22 through Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and Steam. It requires Batman: Arkham Origins (available on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U), and will be given to players who bought the Arkham Origins Season Pass (no price has yet been listed).
