GamesRadar reports that the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed "Dragon Age: Inquisition" is now in "the middle of Production," according to a blog post by BioWare GM Gary McKay posted on Feb. 23.

In his post on the BioWare blog, he mentioned that the next "Dragon Age" game is now way beyond its concept and pre-production phase, saying that they're right in the middle, which is "a great feeling." For those unfamiliar with the game development process, this usually means that there's likely already a playable build of the game, but there's still a ton of work yet to be done.

McKay also mentioned that the "blueprint" they have for the game was already completed last year. As such, one can now assume that they're right in the middle of creating and testing the game's core functionalities-but of course, this is just an assumption as there's nothing else that was shared beyond the "middle of Production claim."

This update straight from the horse's mouth is indicative of significant progress for "Dragon Age 4," considering how long it's been in development. It was first announced with a teaser trailer during the 2018 Game Awards and followed by a cinematic trailer featuring the character Solas during the 2020 edition of the same event:

There were also rumors that the game had undergone a massive overhaul from BioWare's original plans during its arduous development process.

PCGamer reported last year that the next "Dragon Age" game used to have live service features. However, these were reportedly due to the massive success of "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" and the rather spectacular failure of third-person multiplayer shooter "Anthem."

Is This 'Dragon Age 4' Update Well Within Current Rumored Schedules?

Earlier, it was announced that the official "Dragon Age 4" release date is coming within the next 18 months, according to Giant Bomb writer Jeff Grubb (via GameSpot). So this update straight from BioWare themselves seems to be well within the rumored timeline.

The only thing is that Grubb's claims cannot be verified as of yet (BioWare themselves hasn't even confirmed it). Furthermore, it is also worth noting that the studio is working on another big mainline release: the next "Mass Effect," which can affect how the development of "Dragon Age 4" progresses within the foreseeable future.

For now, one thing that's confirmed is that BioWare lifer Mac Walters, who headed the development work for "Mass Effect Legendary Edition," is helming the development team for "Dragon Age 4." He is joined, according to McKay, by "Dragon Age" veterans who will help carry the game through its Production phase and into release.

To close things off, McKay promised that fans would hear more from the development team about the next "Dragon Age" "later this year," though he didn't specify exactly when.
