'All New PlayStation Plus' Finally Revealed As Xbox Game Pass Competitor: What Does It Bring?

Sony Finally Reveals 'All New PlayStation Plus' As Its Official Competitor For Game Pass

Sony's so-called "All New PlayStation Plus" has finally been revealed as their official Xbox Game Pass competitor. And it looks like it has a case to be good.

IGN reports that the revamped PlayStation Plus service will now combine the current version of PS Plus and the game streaming service PlayStation Now. This allows the subscription service to offer three subscription tiers in total, which gives users access to as many as 700 games.

However, only those who opt-in for the top service tier will have access to retro games. This includes PS1, PS2, PSP, and even PS3 games. Sony says that the game library for the all-new PlayStation Plus will be "regularly refreshed," which is something that Xbox Game Pass has been doing for some time.

The only catch is that PS3 games will not be downloadable and instead will only available via cloud streaming.

The only difference with Game Pass is that the new PS Plus service will not offer first-party exclusives-at least for now. There could be a plan in the future but don't expect it to come soon. So that means you won't be able to just pay your way out of a full-price PlayStation exclusive by going for any tier on the new PS Plus.

All New PlayStation Plus Pricing

Sony shared the official pricing for all three subscription tiers in an official PlayStation blog post. The subscriptions are only limited to the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

Tier 1 Pricing (Essential tier)

  • US: $9.99 a month / $24.99 quarterly / $59.99 a year
  • Europe: €8.99 a month / €24.99 quarterly / €59.99 a year
  • UK: £6.99 a month / £19.99 quarterly / £49.99 a year

With the Essential tier, you get access to two downloadable games a month, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for your games, and multiplayer access. This is basically identical to what basic PS Plus members get.
