'Elden Ring' Guide: How To Beat Malenia, Blade Of Miquella

How To Beat Malenia In 'Elden Ring' - The Basics

Elden Ring is full of tough bosses. But one boss stands out of all the rest: Malenia, Blade of Miquella. The Goddess of Rot's fight is not required to finish the game, but it could be the very one standing between you and your goal of 100% completion.

Many people say that she's the toughest FromSoft boss ever made and has gained an infamous reputation for kicking the bums of players who dared challenge her. There's one thing you should know about her, though. She's not invincible. There is a way to beat her, and you'll know of the most important tricks in this guide.

When Should You Fight Malenia?

Learning how to beat Malenia in Elden Ring starts with knowing when you should attempt to fight her, according to Josh Broadwell of VG247. So, when should you even try to take down the so-called Goddess of Rot?

While the Malenia boss fight itself is optional, you can technically only access her lair by doing a few things close to the end of the game. These include opening the gates to the Forbidden Lands and activating the Grand Lift of Rold to get to the area called the Consecrated Snowfields. Here's a quick video to explain what those steps will require of you:

Aside from that, you should never attempt to learn how to beat Malenia in Elden Ring if you're not at least Level 120 or higher. That's because even the slightest misstep in her fight would cost you, as there are barely any weaknesses you can exploit.

Aside from that, make sure that your weapon is a high enough level - nothing lower than 22. And also, try to get a weapon that applies a blood loss effect, so you whittle her health down over time since she heals herself every time she lands a hit on you - even if you manage to block the attack.

How To Beat Malenia - The Basics

Assuming you've reached her boss arena at the Haligtree, make sure that you go to the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace. This is so that you can collect any runes you lose when trying to fight her, according to GameSpot. That's the first and perhaps most important thing you need to do.

Next up is the fight proper. Malenia's boss fight has two phases. The first phase involves her doing some sort of dance with her extremely fast, sweeping sword attacks. This includes an AoE (area of effect) jumping sword dash that would slash a good chunk of your health if she lands a hit.

But while the strikes are hard, fast, and in rapid succession, it is not impossible to dodge. Try to study her entire moveset and determine the perfect time to start your dodge. It might take a long, long time and a lot of practice to do so, but it will be worth it in the end.

As soon as you whittle her health bar down enough, her second phase starts. It begins with an insanely devastating AoE attack, so don't be a fool and keep your distance. As soon as she's finished with the move, go back to your previous attack pattern. Also, try your absolute best to avoid her attacks during the second phase as they now deal Scarlet Rot damage.

The Best Items And Abilities To Have

It matters what types of items you bring (and how you equip them) if you want to learn how to beat Malenia. Here are several recommendations from SportsKeeda that might make your experience a little bit easier:

  • If you're a melee-heavy player, try to bring a weapon that deals Bleed damage. And if you're a sorcerer, bring your highest-damage spells.
  • As much as possible, keep your equipment load low because dodging is required.
  • DO NOT blast through your health flasks during the first phase. Save them up for the second one.
  • To counter Scarlet Rot, bring enough preserving boluses

Bring Spirit Summons - Or Even Other Players - In

FromSoftware put online co-op via summons in Elden Ring for a reason. By summoning other players into your world, you'll give Malenia far more than she can handle. Teaming up with other folks against her is the easiest way to take her down.

And if you play on PC, you might even get help from the legendary player called "Let Me Solo Her," who leaves his summoning sign outside the door to Malenia's boss area for anyone who might need help. That is, if he does answer the call.

Or, if you don't have anybody you know you can team up with, here's a quick guide on how to summon spirits to fight by your side:

Lastly, learning how to beat Malenia will require you to do just one thing endlessly: practice, practice, practice.
