That's because crossplay support is going to come to the three next-gen consoles, alongside Google's cloud gaming service, at a still unannounced date. According to GameSpot, the playtesting for FIFA 22 crossplay on the aforementioned platforms have already begun, covering matches in Online Friendlies and Online Seasons modes.

Goran Popovic of EA Vancouver is excited about the possibility of bringing this new feature to FIFA 22 soon. He did, however, mention that there's still work to be done to ensure that the mode will go smoothly.

Here's what he has to say on the matter:

"While we want to enable our players to play with as many friends and others as possible, we limited the test to these two modes with the aim of reducing the chance for introducing new issues into the game. We are confident that the game data and feedback that we get from these two modes will help inform how crossplay could further be implemented in future titles."

In other words, EA is trying to make sure that there will be as few issues as possible when it comes to crossplay multiplayer. Because this mode has historically been quite problematic. However, it will still be a welcome addition considering how the entire series has been missing it since it began.

For now, this is perhaps the best news about FIFA 22 in recent times considering how the franchise is inching closer than ever to splitting from EA.

Back in February, EA CEO Andrew Wilson has mentioned that the company's football games are being held back by its official FIFA license. As reported by IGN, Wilson reportedly told employees this in an internal meeting.

He was said to have mentioned how the global football governing body has kept EA from expanding the game series into new modes. Wilson reportedly even went as far as saying that the only value the company gets from its FIFA partnership is the "four letters on the front of the box."

More Details About The FIFA 22 Crossplay Test

As previously mentioned, official FIFA 22 crossplay is still not out - this is just a playtest. But nothing is stopping you from trying the game mode out and seeing what it has to offer so far.

To start crossplaying with a friend on a different console, you need to go for the Online Friendlies mode during the test (via the official FAQ page). To do so, follow these steps:

  • Search for your friend using their platform or EA username

  • Select your friend's name and choose the option to add them as a friend online

  • Your friend should now see the request and accept it in the widget.

  • To start playing, choose your friend's name from your friends list in the widget. Follow the onscreen prompts to invite them to play.

Here are the directions on how to enable or disable crossplay in general:

  • Visit the Matchmaking Options Setting screen

  • Pick the Cross-Play Opt-in/Opt-out to turn the playtest on or off.
