As reported by IGN, the development team working on the fourth installment of the sci-fi shooter franchise just hired Mattias Engström as game director. He formerly served as the director for Hitman 3 at IO Interactive and will now helm the new project in the works at CryTek. He is expected to join the team this week to start working on the new Crysis title.

Here is the announcement of Engström's hiring from the official Crysis Twitter page:

Mattias Engström is a game industry veteran in every sense of the word. Before working on Hitman 3 (a position he actually only held for three years), he's been an IO Interactive employee for far longer. He's been with the studio since 2014.

But before joining IO, he was also a part of Ubisoft Massive, where he worked from 2004 to 2014. Engström was instrumental in creating games such as Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed Revelations. As such, this wealth of experience is likely to come in handy when it comes to Crysis 4, which was first teased by CryTek earlier this year.

The teaser for Crysis 4 was in the form of a short, 46-second video uploaded to the official Crysis YouTube channel:

As you can see there, the teaser never really revealed anything substantial: just the number 4 indicating that the fourth installment of the shooter series is underway. CryTek also said that the title Crysis 4 is a "working title," so it could be called a different name once it comes out to the market.

Due to helming Hitman 3, Engström's experience is mostly focused on creating open-ended sandbox levels, writes Eurogamer. With this kind of experience in tow, the development of Crysis 4 could very well be altered into something never before seen in the franchise - but everything is still up the air.

Everything Known So Far About Crysis 4

As previously mentioned, there's barely anything about Crysis 4. CryTek has been pretty good at keeping mum about the details, though they did say that the game is still in early development as per a blog post.

The aforementioned blog post on the CryTek website confirmed the existence of the game. But since the game is still in early development, company CEO Avni Yerli has mentioned "it will be a while yet" until more concrete details about it are revealed. He did say, however, that the team "can't wait to reveal more details about what lies ahead."

Now, we move onto pure speculative territory. Considering that it might be several years before the game comes out, it could be safe to assume it would be a next-gen console exclusive. So don't expect the PS4 and Xbox One to get the game, as CryTek could only want to push modern gaming hardware to its limits - just as they did in 2007 with the original Crysis.
