This Overwatch Player Was Sitting on a Special Loot Box for Years That Will Soon be Gone

Overwatch Player Discovers A Special Loot Box They've Sat on for YEARS

Overwatch players now only have several months left on the original game before it gets replaced by its sequel this October. As such, some players are now playing it for a multitude of reasons - perhaps from nostalgia, or anything else.

The Porcelain Skin for Wrecking Ball is one of the three Epic Skins that are up for grabs in Overwatch's Lunar New Year Event.

However, one player's recent playthrough of the original game led them to discover something quite interesting. As reported by GameRant, Overwatch player and Redditor cambamwam123 recently discovered that they've been sitting on a very limited-edition Wrecking Ball loot box for years. They posted their "discovery" on the game's subreddit, asking if they're the only one who still has two unopened Wrecking Ball loot boxes:

As of this writing, the Reddit post has earned over 700 upvotes and over 100 comments from some people saying that they've held onto theirs too. And while they mentioned how Overwatch 2 will automatically open any unopened Overwatch loot boxes when it launches, they still said how opening them yourself will still be more enjoyable.

Wrecking Ball-themed Overwatch loot boxes were first announced back in July 2018. As per a video post from the game's official Facebook page, the loot boxes were given exclusively to Twitch Prime members. As such, these loot boxes are something ordinary folks without a Twitch Prime subscription could never get - because technically they'd have to "pay" for it by virtue of an Amazon Prime membership.

The loot boxes were launched alongside the release of the Tank hero Wrecking Ball, who was a new addition to the game at the time. Thus, the theme. These loot boxes were then released a few months after the announcement on September 3rd, 2018. As for the contents of the loot box, they randomly gave out Hammond-themed items like skins, sprays, and voice lines.

Either way, the special Wrecking Ball/Hammond loot box will be gone in OW2 because Activision Blizzard has opted to remove the loot box system entirely. Overwatch 2 launches on October 4th for last-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles, PC, and the Nintendo Switch.

What's Going To Replace Overwatch Loot Boxes?

Since the loot box system will be gone in OW2 as per Activision Blizzard, it had to be replaced by a different one that gives out more or less the same stuff - while still making money for the devs. And that's where we arrive at the Overwatch 2 battle pass and in-game shop.

As reported by Dexerto, the battle pass system will be designed to help give players "more control" over the content that they get. The battle pass itself will be updated as each season rolls in, same as the in-game shop which we could assume will work like Fortnite's item shop. Aside from these, though, ActiBlizz didn't reveal much.

In terms of cost, there's also not a lot of exact information about how much Overwatch 2's battle pass will cost. Some assumptions float around, though, with Forbes estimating that it could cost players around $10 every season.
