Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Reveals The Witcher 3's Influence on Next Phase

During a recent conversation with Game Informer Magazine, Motomu Toriyama, co-director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, highlighted the profound impact of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on the evolution of the much-awaited JRPG.

Toriyama openly acknowledged The Witcher 3 as a standout among his preferred role-playing games beyond the realm of Final Fantasy. His revelation extended beyond mere personal taste, emphasizing how CD Projekt Red's fantasy epic significantly shaped the direction of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, particularly in its treatment of side quests.

"Regarding titles like The Witcher 3, which has that open-world role-playing type element, we did some extensive research into these types of titles,” Toriyama explained. The Witcher 3 served as a "baseline" for Rebirth, aiming to deliver content that stands alongside it and satisfies players with meaningful side quests.

Shaping Side Quests in Rebirth

The impact of The Witcher 3 is notably clear in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's focus on broadening and enhancing the side quest journey. Square Enix seeks to remedy a recurring critique from Final Fantasy 16 by drawing from The Witcher 3's method of crafting compelling and significant secondary narratives.

The game's expansion into a larger gaming environment, which includes the revival of the iconic 1997 world map, showcases the team's dedication to providing a richer and more varied gaming environment.

What to Expect in Rebirth

Fans can anticipate the return of the iconic world map and a more prominent role for the antagonist, Sephiroth, within the game's environment. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth goes beyond nostalgia by introducing entirely new cities that never appeared in the original, providing players with fresh and unexplored territories.

The incorporation of a deck-building minigame, reminiscent of Gwent, promises additional depth and entertainment within the expanded game space.
