Superman Joins 'Arrow': Brandon Routh Will Portray The Atom In Third Season Of The Best Comic Book Show On TV

The casting news continues for the upcoming 3rd season of 'how is this as good as it is, it's on the CW?' Arrow.

Deadlin reports that Superman himself, Brandon Routh, will be joining the cast as The Atom. The beloved DC character, whose real name is Ray Palmer, has the ability to shrink himself down to the atomic level. While the show is patently absurd, I doubt it will be 'incredible shrinking man' absurd. However, it is set in the same universe as the upcoming Flash spin-off series, so anything can happen.

The 34 year old actor has signed on for a 14 episode arc where Palmer, a brilliant scientist, will take over as the new head of Queen Consolidated after the last CEO met a somewhat untimely end. Palmer will also serve as the love interest for Oliver 'The Arrow' Queen's longtime tech Felicity Smoak. Hey, if she needed a boyfriend, she could always call me.

Routh is no stranger to the DC world. He was a relative unknown when he got the lead in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns back in 2006. Routh's time in the cape was an awkward one, but Routh himself was pretty great. Sadly, the Superman curse plagued him as it did former Superman Christopher Reeves. Routh was simply never able to rise above the 'last son of Krypton' moniker and has kept himself busy with small parts over the years, most notably as a love interest/bad guy on NBC's Chuck.

He joins fellow newcomers Devon Aoki, the great Peter Stormare, Karl Yune and new series regular John Barrowman as the new faces who will be warring for the soul of Starling City. The third season of Arrow premieres October 8.

Stephen Amell, who portrays the titular Arrow, will sadly not be bringing his interpretation of the famed DC archer to the Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Cameo Fanservice currently in production.

Here's hoping Routh can get in shape. He has a lot of catching up to do:
