Gotham Knights' Gear Menu UI Draws Flak From Fans

Warner Bros. confirmed that "Gotham Knights" is coming this October 25.

According to a report by GameRant, the fans were referring to the gear menu that was shown during the latest gameplay demo posted by Warner Bros. This featured Nightwing and Red Hood, wherein their combat skills and armor crafting/upgrade features were looked at in detail.

One Reddit user called AdZealousideal6959 said that they "hate" the gear menu shown in the new Gotham Knights gameplay trailer, while posting a screenshot of Nightwing's gear menu which shows his equipment and gear stats. As of this writing, the post has garnered 183 upvotes:

The user didn't really elaborate on why they think the menu looks like it came from a mobile game, but maybe it's more obvious to some folks. The UI design itself does look basic and barebones, and not something you might expect from a big-budget AAA game.

For instance, the font used in the meny doesn't look special at all - they don't even use the same font that the game's title has. Aside from that, the different tabs referring to Gear, Abilities, Case Files, and others were just literal boxes with the words inside them. If you look at another AAA game's gear/inventory menu, they definitely don't look as barebones as this.

One Reddit user, however, commented that the UI design might be just a placeholder until a better one is designed. And this makes a bit of sense, considering the game is still very much a work in progress - which could also explain why the controller buttons don't have the usual PlayStation or Xbox icons in them.

It is likely that the footage Warner Bros. showed during the latest Nightwing and Red Hood gameplay is from an earlier build of the game that's not representative of the game's current state as of this writing. That is a very common practice in the gaming industry as whole. Either way, the gear menu's UI could still change once Gotham Knights comes out on October 25th.

In other news involving the upcoming DC game, Warner Bros. has announced that they've cancelled the last-gen versions of it and are now solely focusing on developing the game for current-gen (i.e. PS5, Xbox Series X/S) and PC.

According to IGN, the reasoning of the dev team was simple: "to provide players with the best possible gameplay experience." There was no official announcement, however, as this was only made clear at the end of the Nightwing/Redhood gameplay showcase where only the logos of current-gen consoles were displayed, alongside Steam and Epic Games.

With this announcement, Warner Bros. have set the expectations for Gotham Knights even higher than it was before. But aside from that, it will also give them even more time to polish the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game to ensure that it will launch with as few hiccups as possible.
